About Dr Shameem Shariff
Dr. Shameem Shariff graduated from the Government Medical College, Bellary in 1976. She did her MD in Pathology from the Bengaluru, Karnataka, India in 1981. In 1994 she obtained her PhD from the Bangalore University, the first Doctorate from Karnataka in the subject.
From 1982 to 2002, Shariff was on the teaching faculty of St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, Karnataka India. She was Professor and Head, Department of Pathology at St. John’s Medical College from 1997 to 2002, after which she left to take up assignments as senior consultant in Histopathology and Cytopathology at the Ministry of Health, Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain. During this period she was also part-time Professor of Pathology at the Arabian Gulf University, Bahrain. Recently, she retired as Professor and Head at the MVJ Medical College, Hoskote, Bengaluru, Karnataka India.
Dr. Shariff has numerous international and national publications to her credit. She is the member of several academic bodies, and is President of the Academy of Pathology, an Organisation founded by her to promote post graduate teaching in Pathology. She is on the advisory board of the Journal of Medical Sciences and Health, Adichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences; editorial board – Journal of Cytology (1986 to 1997); Journal of Basic Medical Sciences, Vinayaka Mission Hospital, Salem ; Journal of the Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar. She is also on the Advisory Board for Research at the Devaraj Urs Research Institute Kolar.
Dr. Shariff has had training in Cytopathogy and Tumour Pathology at various Institutions abroad, including the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York and the Memorial Medical Center, Long Beach, California, USA; under a UCLA travel fellowship. She has been examiner to several Universities both at the undergraduate and post graduate level as well as PhD guide, and member, Board of Studies for Post Graduates in Pathology (formerly chairman paraclinical Board for post graduates), Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Karnataka, India.
Dr. Shariff has conducted numerous State, National and International workshops in Pathology. She has had the honour of being invited as guest speaker at several Institutions in India as well as abroad. Her vast experience and aptitude for post graduate teaching has motivated her to publish several text books. Her first book “Laboratory techniques in Surgical Pathology” in 1999 was widely used in all hospitals and laboratory as a guide for grossing and other laboratory techniques; as well as included in the list of recommended books for post-graduate reading at the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, Karnataka. Subsequent to this her other books such as “Fundamentals of Surgical Pathology” and “Principles and Interpretation of Laboratory Practices in Surgical Pathology”, Jaypee Pvt. Ltd., released in 2010 and 2017 are extremely popular and widely read by pathologists all over India. In 2018 the new edition of “Fundamentals of Surgical Pathology” by Jaypee publishers will be ready.
